Please Note: This is a Provisional Appointment.  A provisional appointment is pending the appropriate NYS Civil Service Exam announced and administered locally. The provisional appointee will be required to sign up to take the exam once it is announced, pay the exam fee (or fee waiver if applicable), pass the exam and rank in the top three (3) grades to secure a permanent appointment.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This technical position involves responsibility for coordinating information technology activities, services, and functions within the Saratoga Springs School District, or in a department or among departments.  The incumbent is responsible for providing a variety of staff support services, including equipment installation and maintenance of local and wide area networks.  The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level employee.  Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this position.  The incumbent does related work as assigned and required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: The duties listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Configures equipment and completes cable interfaces, referencing wiring diagrams and technical instructions and using special hand tools and testing equipment to validate proper performance;
  • Evaluates and recommends acquisitions of information technology hardware and software to meet automation needs;
  • Participates in the planning for and the installation of information technology equipment such as: computers, iPads, tablets, printers, scanners, monitors, document cameras, interactive panels, phones, etc.
  • Keeps informed on new developments in information technology hardware and software and reviews publications and specifications;
  • Instructs new and existing staff regarding the use of information technology equipment and software;
  • Operates, monitors, and controls computer network server and peripheral devices;
  • Studies system and application operating instructions to determine proper equipment setup and run requirements;
  • Maintains records on machine performance and contacts appropriate technical personnel in the event of machine or software malfunction;
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of all supported information technology hardware
  • Performs normal daily maintenance tasks, such as file backups and restoration, and fire reorganization as required by the various application procedures;
  • Performs software imaging operations needed to maintain operating systems;
  • Reports non-repairable equipment to vendor and obtains replacements;
  • Moves information technology equipment to various locations as necessary;
  • Supplies substitute information technology equipment with appropriate software while problem information technology equipment are diagnosed and repaired;
  • Demonstrates and trains users in the operation and maintenance of information technology hardware and software;
  • Plans, implements and monitors local and wide area networks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of information technology hardware and software; good knowledge of local operations of computers and data communication devices; good knowledge of configuration of local and wide area network administration; working knowledge of data processing methodology and techniques including documentation of data security; ability to define and recommend computer hardware and software; ability to detect and resolve information technology hardware breakdowns and problems; ability to develop and conduct workshops related to information technology operations and maintenance; ability to deduce problems logically; ability to configure work stations and local and wide area networks; computer literacy; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to train others in information technology system operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (either):

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with an Associates Degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Data Processing, Information Management Systems, Information Technology, OR
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and ONE (1) YEAR full-time paid experience involving the maintenance, installation of microcomputer hardware and software, and configuration of networks

SPECIAL NOTES:

  • Equivalent part-time paid relevant work experience as noted above will be accepted as a minimum of 2 years at 20+ hours per week with being equivalent to one year of full-time experience 
  • 30 college credits successfully completed with a current enrollment in an Associates or higher degree program in the Information Technology field may be substituted for the required experience as noted above if degree requirement
    • Appointment will be rescinded if the requirements are not met within 12 months of application
  • Degree must have been awarded by a college or university by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the US Department of Education/US Secretary of Education.  If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.  A list of acceptable companies who provide this service can be found on the internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm.  You must pay the required evaluation fee.
